I was recently looking at the discussions on the Toastmasters group on ‘LinkedIn,’ and came across something I think is a great idea regarding club-level contests. Mike Raffety, an International Director and frequent contributor to discussions, suggested having everyone who is not participating in the contest act as a judge.
Perhaps some clubs already do this, but if not, I think this is a fabulous idea; not only because it takes the worry out of finding judges, but even more so because it can help provide all members with familiarity with the judging forms and judging in general. However, I would suggest that clubs review the forms at a meeting prior to the contest.
Also, if you’re not a member of the “Official Toastmasters International Members Group“ on LinkedIn yet, you can join via the Toastmasters.Org home page. There are some great ideas and discussions.

Great idea Luanne, particularly if you can combine it with a short judging workshop from an experienced Toastmaster.
What better way to get the newer members to understand how judging works and to gain experience before they are asked to be one of the (fewer) official judges at another level?
BTW - anyone who has a Facebook or LinkedIn account may now add this to their personal profile on the District website.
Be sure that you are logged in, click on 'Profile' in the menubar and you will find these options if you tick the 'Show Advanced Options' box.

One can only agree with the concept as Luanne suggests. Our Immediate Past President, Robert Bennet suggested it to Ennis Toastmasters last year. However it did not meet with universal approval, especially among the contestants.
Essentially, workshops at club level would have to be held as Malcom has proposed, so that members would be aware of the judging criteria prior to the contests.
While it would not conform to contest rules, nevertheless it would be interesting if the contests at the Dublin Inspire conference were to be judged by everyone who is not a participant in the contest. What a thought! |

Hi Luanne
We encouraged this in clubs in Area 15 in Yorkshire a few years back as we struggled to find judges at Area contests. We do a mini education slot to explain the marking sheet.
I believe the standard of judging in the Area has improved considerably since we started doing it.
Already part of the Official Toastmaster International discussion group on LinkedIn. Have set up ones for Area 15, Division E and the clubs in Area 15. Interesting way to generate discusssion along with using D71 of course.
Cheers
