Bishopstown Toastmasters Meeting Updates

Saturday 24th July 2010

An interesting meeting, populated in the main by some of more accomplished speakers.

This was a momentous day for member Barry Griffin as he delivered his final speech – stage 10 – of the Toastmasters foundation course and in the process earned the accolade of Competent Communicator. Barry joined Bishopstown Toastmasters in November 2009 to prepare for a best man speech for a wedding in July 2010. Barry, in his stage 10 speech, outlined the many benefits he has gained in Bishopstown Toastmasters in addition to meeting his primary objective of delivering a first class best man speech.

First up was Murt Ó’ Súilleabháin delivering his stage 5 speech from the foundation course – a project that deals with developing effective body language. Next up was founding member Theresa Lynch delivering her stage 8 from the foundation course – which helps us develop a skill in using visual aids.

The final speaker was John Keating who delivered a stage 4 from the Humorously Speaking manual – keep them laughing. John’s speech entitled “The Male Brain Vs The Female Brain” dealt humorously with the differences in how men and women think.

The meeting was managed by Andy Kirk supported by Ber Whelan providing the unexpected questions.

The feedback session was led by Damian Loftus supported by John O’Donovan, Neil Daly and Tyrone Fehilly. Jen Moynihan acted as Grammarian.

Next meeting 4th September, after a short break in August.

Saturday 17th July 2010

There have been many high points in the short history of Bishopstown Toastmasters, each besting what’s gone before, but today must be a stand out moment – 3 Icebreakers in July. Icebreaker speeches signify a new member’s launch into the self-development world of Toastmasters. In addition it proves the value of Bishopstown Toastmasters – the only Toastmaster club to serve its members all year around, contrasting with other Toastmaster clubs who shut down for 3 months of the summer.

First up was Catriona Sheehan who posed the question “Does Life begin at 30?”. For the writer of this piece – oh! To be 30 again.

Second Ice Breaker was delivered by Martin O’Connell with an appropriate title “Breaking the Ice”.

Third up was entrepreneur and successful businessman Kieran Maher with a speech entitled “Taking a Risk Again”.

The speech session was rounded off by founding member, Tessie Murray, doing her stage 7 speech, which was a review of the writings of poet Brendan Kennelly.

The speech session was followed by an educational presentation by John Keating which provided advice on how to select good topics for speeches.

The meeting was led by Damian Loftus with Murt Ó’Súilleabháin asking the unexpected questions to which select members were asked to provide an impromptu reply in less than 2 minutes.

The feedback team was led by Andy Kirk supported by Ber Whelan, Jan Moynihan, John O’Donovan and John Keating.

New member Paul MacGabhainn acted as timekeeper with Catherine O’Leary as Ah Counter and Tessie Murray in addition to delivering a speech doubling up as Grammarian.

Saturday 10th July 2010

First up was new member Paul MacGabhainn with his maiden speech in Toastmasters entitled “From Cavan to Cork”. Appropriate then that Cork played Cavan in the football qualifiers later in the afternoon.

Next up was Damian Loftus, speaking from the Advanced Communication manual – Persuasive Speaking. In this Damian was asked to 1) communicate a vision and mission to an audience and 2) convince the audience to work towards achieving the vision and the mission. Damian’s speech entitled “the need to curb and prevent abuses by the media” set out his vision.

The 3rd speaker was Barry Griffin who availed of the occasion to practise his best man speech – the live version of which will be delivered next Saturday.

Tessie Murray led the evaluation team supported by John Keating, Theresa Lynch and John O’Donovan.

Catherine O’Leary chaired the meeting with Theresa O’Reilly asking the impromptu questions, with Ber Whelan as Timekeeper, Catriona Sheehan as Ah Counter and Murt Ó’Súilleabháin as Grammarian.

Saturday 3rd July 2010

The first meeting of the Toastmasters New Year was another enthusiastic, thought provoking and inspiring event. While other Toastmasters clubs have their summer sleep Bishopstown continues to serve its members.

First up was Murt Ó Súilleabháin, a recent convert from the slumbering Ballincollig club with his stage 4 speech – a project that helps us choose the right words in imparting a message.

Next, was Theresa O’Reilly a new member, who in a few short weeks is up to stage 5 – Gestures. This project provides instruction in supporting a message with appropriate gestures.

Rounding off the speech session was Barry Griffin who completed stage 9 of the 10 stage foundation programme. Stage 9 is about persuading an audience with power.

John Keating delivered an educational presentation on the Toastmasters International educational programme.

Damian Loftus led the feedback team supported by John O’Donovan and Tyrone Fehilly (yet another Toastmaster from a slumbering club – Sláinte).

Tessie Murray was meeting manager with John Keating popping the unexpected questions.

Theresa Lynch was timekeeper with Catherine O’Leary as Grammarian.
