Welcome to District 71 - Land of Heart's Desire Conference, Sligo. 14th, 15th, 16th, May 2010
Two years ago we, the members of Innisfree and Sligo Toastmasters Clubs, set out on a journey – a journey that would lead us to a Toastmasters conference. This journey has been taken by many clubs before us and with great success. We have been hearing of the many trials and tribulations, the joys and the wonderful sense of satisfaction in hosting a Toastmasters Conference. We are now experiencing the many challenges that others have faced before us. But we are most grateful to the many words of advice and the wonderful encouragement we are getting from those who have travelled this road before us and the expressions of goodwill for our success are most encouraging. But in the true spirit of Toastmasters we will rise to the occasion and deliver to you a whopping good conference. For district 71 the North West is virgin territory as far as conferences are concerned and we are determined to prove that we are up there with the best.

Just over 12 years ago was the momentous occasion when Sligo Toastmasters was born. For some time it remained an outpost in the North West with the nearest clubs being Mullingar, Athlone and Galway. Since then we could tell you how the West was won and how the toastmasters map has changed so completely. The new comers are Westport, Ballina, Carrick-on-Shannon, Enniskillen, Letterkenny, Longford, Roscommon and then of course Sligo with a population of around 20,000 within the borough forming a second club Innisfree. We are proud of our unique achievement in showing the way in which you don’t need a huge population centre to sustain a second club. We in Sligo are delighted to host a conference so close to all these new clubs thus giving so many of the more recent Toastmasters the opportunity of the unique experience of a conference without having major travel.
There is the wonderful opportunity to hear people who are leaders in their field impart their knowledge in workshops on subjects in which they are proficient. There is the serious Toastmasters business to be conducted such as the election of officers. Yes, the team that will lead Toastmasters during the coming year. And don’t forget two of the highlights of the conference – the International Speech and Evaluation contests. In these competitions you will hear the top speakers in Ireland and the U.K. battle it out for the District honors.
You will have a wonderful weekends entertainment starting off with a Golf Competition, then members of a Brass Band, The Straw Boys, A Disco, A Bus Tour of the area. Pipers, A Choir ;and yes a Gala Ball (Black Tie) |
| Land of Hearts Desire Golf Championship |
This conference has a new aspect to it – The Golf championship. It was suggested to us at the Kilkenny Conference that we should hold a Golf Tournament and Sligo having two of the most scenic Golf courses in the world the temptation was just too great. We said if a section of the Delegates want a Golf Tournament then a Golf Tournament they shall have.
Our subcommittee has chosen Strandhill Golf Club as the venue for the event and it will look idyllic in May. A number of golfers are coming a day early in order to play the two courses and of course County Sligo Golf club in Rosses Point is a Championship course on which Rory McElroy won one of his first major Trophies. So why not have the pleasure of playing two magnificent courses during your stay for the Conference. While you can book for the Golf Tournament when booking for the Conference the contact person for the Tournament is:-
Ciaran Higgins +353(0)872387333 or Send an email.
We are advised that May is a busy month on these courses so early booking is advisable and we kid you not. |
