Welcome to District 71 Toastmasters—serving over 7500 members in the Britain and Ireland
As a visitor to our site, you may be asking, "What is Toastmasters?" Well, Toastmasters is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs.
It was started by Dr. Ralph Smedley in 1924 at a YMCA in Santa Ana, California, as a way to help its young patrons “learn the art of public speaking and in presiding over meetings.” Dr. Smedley decided the training format would be similar to a social club, and during the early 1900s the word “toastmaster” referred to a person who proposed the toasts and introduced the speakers at a banquet. So Dr. Smedley named his group “The Toastmasters Club”, because he thought it suggested a pleasant, social atmosphere that would be appealing.
From this humble beginning, Toastmasters International has grown to become a world leader in helping people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. Toastmasters now has 292,000 members in 122 countries, offering a proven way to develop communication and leadership skills—which in turn promotes greater self-confidence and personal growth.
However, learning these very important skills can also be fun and easy. Toastmaster clubs offer a friendly, supportive, learn-by-doing environment where you’ll receive guidance through self-paced manuals. You’ll also receive structured, supportive feedback from your fellow members--who share the common goal of improving their communication and leadership skills. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success.
If you’re over 18, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, Toastmasters can help you improve in your personal and professional life. Whether it’s appearing confident in a job interview, giving a presentation at work to one or one thousand, or communicating with those who are important in your life, Toastmasters can help.
