Welcome
Area Governor's Welcome
Welcome to Area 11! We have 6 thriving, vibrant clubs throughout West Cork, each of which gives you an opportunity to meet people with similar interests, become comfortable enough to stand up and voice your opinions occasionally and later find the courage amongst new friends to stand up and give a talk. And, you will not have died! I can vouch for that - because I've been there and I'v survived. It is a process, not an overnight miracle, as each week you become involved firstly maybe in our Topics session with a break for tea to socialise, fears are broken down gradually and a 'Maybe I can!' attitude takes over.

We have clubs in - alphabetical order! - Bandon, Bantry, Beara, Clonakilty, Kinsale and Macroom - all different in their own way, yet each following the same successful formula of Toastmasters International. As Area Governor, I visit all the Clubs and I can tell you that you will feel welcome and comfortable as soon as you enter each and every one of them.

Most clubs meet about 8 p.m. - some are 7.70, others 8.15 - but punctuality is the order of the day at Toastmastrs meetings and there's no holding on for 'latecomers' something I very much appreciated when I joined. Neither are people allowed to 'ramble' on as everything (mostly!) is kept strictly to a pre-set time - in that way, everyone who wants to, gets a chance to 'practice' speaking. Because, that is basically what we are doing, practicing speaking, being encouraged by our fellow members and very kindly evaluated afterwards with a suggestion or two as to how we could have given the speech more effectively. Very few want to be public speakers (!) we just want to become more confident speaking in certain situations and be able to ask questions or voice our opinions at public or other venues or indeed become an officer in any of the numerous clubs in the community. Maybe you have a Best Man speech to give - or Father/Mother of the Bride speech - we've had people who needed help with those issues come to Toastmasters - and stayed well after the wedding! Nowadays, with job shortages, its a good idea to polish up your communication and body language skills before presenting yourself at a interview. Toastmasters gives you that opportunity

Toastmasters have two training routes and as you progress you do both. One, as mentioned, is Communication skills, the other is Leadership skills. Do you need to know how to Chair a meeting? Be a President of a club, A Treasurer? A Public Relations Officer - preparing Press releases? Help with a Web site? The opportunities for leadership are there also with plenty of experienced, helpful people to guide you.

You'll find a warm welcome and a supportive atmosphere on your first and every visit. Come along - give it a try!
Ann Dinneen,
Area Governor for Area 11

Welcome to Area 11
Area 11 clubs operate in unique West Cork fashion, each having a distinctive personality, although the goals are the same. We meet on different week nights. Meetings last two hours. The amount of learning, the amount of laughter, and the amount of camaraderie we pack into the two hours is also unique. I've found it nowhere except in Toastmasters. Our clubs cover the West Cork map, so a meeting place is never far from you. Come along and give us a try.

The mission of a Toastmasters Club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth. You've got nothing to lose - and everything to gain!

Yes - YOU - can!
